Faubion's 5th graders learned about the
Indonesian tradition of batik and used a similar process to design their own fabric around the theme of peace. We read the book
"What Does Peace Feel Like?" and brainstormed various symbols & imagery that represents peace. After drawing their design on the fabric, students traced over with Elmer's gel glue to act as their resist, in place of liquid wax. Afterwards, students used acrylic paints on top, covering up the dried glue. The fabric was then washed, dissolving the glue, which made the original design reappear through the paint. The pictures above show the fabric before & after it was washed. Well done, 5th graders! They're beautiful :]
The fabric they used were 14x14" cotton bandanas, but if it's within your budget, it would be really neat to let students design their own shirts.
