Farewell to Faubion: 3rd Grade

Faubion's building, which opened in 1950, will be getting demolished this summer for a complete rebuild. While the new school is being constructed, all Faubion staff, students, & even furniture will be temporarily placed at Tubman School. To help the students with the transition and to reflect on their positive experiences at Faubion, all K-5 students worked on school tribute art projects for the final weeks of the year.

3rd graders learned about Keith Haring and created stylized figures for a collaborative mural. You can read a more detailed description of this lesson's objective below, along with close ups of the final artwork (sorry for the glare-it's laminated!). This beautiful mural is on display in the Faubion Writing Gallery, and will be displayed again at Tubman next school year!

3rd Grade Van Gogh Sunflowers

Faubion's 3rd graders learned about Van Gogh when they made mosaic recreations of his paintings. They loved his artwork & were fascinated by the sad story of his life. We delved even further by reading "Van Gogh & the Sunflowers" before making this project. The students learned about watercolor techniques and color-mixing when painting their vases and backgrounds. We discussed the differences between two-dimensional and three-dimensional artworks, and then painted two-dimensional sunflowers on the paper. To create the three-dimensional flowers, the students cut & shaped recycled egg cartons before painting them & gluing them onto the paper. These are a beautiful springtime addition to the Faubion hallway!

  

  

3rd grade Van Gogh mosaics!

Faubion's 3rd graders have been learning about Van Gogh's life & his astounding paintings. Each class voted on one of his paintings to recreate with oil pastels. Mrs. Stoeger's class chose "Starry Night" & Mrs. Brown's class chose "Cafe Terrace at Night". Each student had a small piece of the painting to recreate individually before all of our squares were taped together & minor inconsistencies were fixed. They turned out FANTASTIC, did they not?! They have gotten a lot of attention in the school's hallway :] Below, I also included a "Bedroom in Arles" mosaic students of mine did a couple years ago.

patterned landscapes

Irvington's 3rd grade artists learned all about creating landscapes, and how to convey perspective with a foreground, middleground, and background. The students designed a wide variety of habitats including volcanoes, deserts, islands, forests, meadows, and more. Then they filled in the components of their landscapes with colorful & diverse patterns. These artworks are absolutely mesmerizing! Great job, 3rd graders :]

positive/negative peace signs!

Faubion's students read the book "What Does Peace Feel Like?" and created different artworks around the theme of "peace". I love this book because it was written by children from all around the world, and it led to some insightful discussions about what peace means to my students. 2nd graders created bubble letter art, using colors and symbols that convey peace to them. When placed together, their art becomes a collaborative masterpiece which spells out "Peace and Love to Everyone", a message that is straight from the book we read :]

3rd graders learned about positive & negative space and chose to add expressive words or imagery into each. The students shared their creative ideas on peace both visually & through literacy. Using positive/negative space with imagery/words created an interesting balance in their art. Their thoughts on peace were really beautiful & inspiring!
